Formally called the Orphan Serpentine, the Lemurian Royal Guard are more than mere soldiers. While nominally bred to form the elite palace guards of the Lemurian Lounge (the ruling feudal lords), the Orphan Serpentine are Gaaki spawn taken as hatchlings from their families and raised in military camp academies to a variety of roles – functionaries, clerks, and warriors.
Free souls rather than slaves, the Serpentine are paid regular salaries for their duties. While generally seen as second-class citizens, they often achieve high positions of office and grow to figures of influence behind the seats of power. The support of the palace guard is essential for any court prince, dauphin, and would-be dictator of Lemuria.
Strictly disciplined and ordered, the Serpentine are forbidden to breed without special leave and their loyalty to the Lounge is rigidly enforced and unquestioned. They are staunch supporters of Lemurian values, luddites when it comes to reform, new laws, and modernization. Even so, many desire ways to better the status of their caste through everything from court intrigue to outright rebellion.
